One of the best things about not having to go to school anymore was that there was no one around to teach him stuff he already knew. He'd heard everyone preach about the downsides; 'no social interaction', 'turning into a loner', 'jumping onto the wrong side of the tracks'. Brushing it off was easy, especially when he knew that Tadashi would always be there to challenge him and just be the brother he needed. Sure there were times when they didn't see eye to eye. No siblings ever did all the time. But without him there he'd be in real trouble... half the reason sneaking out of the house to go botfighting was so appealing was because he knew that Tadashi would always be there to save him if things got tricky.
The last time he had to save him he got his brother arrested. Exactly what Tadashi said would happen. It'd just been another night where he went out botfighting on his own, earning a little cash and totally owning the biggest, baddest guy he could find. Which lead to Hiro being chased by Yama, the best botfighter in that area. Just like always Tadashi saved him from getting beaten up but with the money he'd earned from the bets placed illegally.... Well that lead to the entire group getting caught and arrested.
Aunt Cass was always there for him. To Hiro, she was his mother figure. Always there to keep him on the right tracks alongside Tadashi. She completed the family he found himself immersed in. Not that he'd ever admit that to anyone. After all his job was to keep his two most important people on their toes.
"Great. I get to see your nerd lab."
It'd never sounded interesting, seeing his brother's lab. Hiro's assumption had been that they messed around all day with all their ideas. Actually, he couldn't remember asking about what Tadashi had been working on. At all. That was a horrible feeling to stomach. Eh his botfighting was more important at this point anyway. His brother could tell him about his project anyday.
Stepping into the lab it was nothing like he expected. Each person had their own unique projects, electro-mag suspension on a big, chemical embrittlement and all other types of projects created through science and engineering. It hit home that this was Tadashi's second family. His friends that he spent almost every day with. His brother's project had been impressive. It was hard to believe it was actually built by his brother. He called it Baymax and it was going to be a 'personal healthcare companion'. Something like that was just so.... Tadashi. A robot built to be non-threatening and to help people. With injiries or other stuff. That was what made his brother so awesome.
Meeting Professor Callaghan changed everything. That was the man who taught at Tadashi's university... the one who invented the tech he used for his bot. Leaving that College only left one thought his his mind.
"I HAVE to go here."
Day and night he spent planning. Writing down ideas which never seemed to work. There was LITERALLY NOTHING IN HIS STUPID EMPTY BRAIN. In a few days time a showcase was going to be held and if people liked what he came up with, he was in. He'd get to go to the same College as Tadashi and expand on his ideas. But that would only happen if he came up with something. Just like always, it was Tadashi who came to his rescue.
The microbots. His project. The one he built with his brother. Hiro felt more accomplishment by completeing those tiny robots than anything he'd ever done with botfighting. The nuro transmitter was done and all the tests were positive: these robots could do whatever the person with the nuro transmitter wanted them to. One person could do the work of hundreds of construction workers, transport people with no threat to the environment. They were the way of the future.
This project was going to work. It had to. Hiro's tech had to be good enough... but he could still feel his hands shaking as he wheeled the bin towards the stage. Showing false bravado to his friends made him feel better. Just a little. It was easy to hide his nerves when he was just messing around. But standing on that stage in front of all those people... he was scared. Not nervous; scared. That was the moment when his eyes met with Tadashi's as he saw his gesture of just one thing.
Having Tadashi there was the only thing that could have gotten him through the presentation. To his relief, he was invited to attend the College and even though he acted all excited Hiro was just that. Relieved. After seeing what he had at the school he couldn't just go back to botfighting. He wanted to expand his horizons and look for new angles. Messing around with Tadashi after the presentation helped him shake off the last of his nerves.
Then a fire broke out. The school exploded into flames and Tadashi being who Hiro knew he was raced back to make sure everyone was out safely. Professor Callaghan was still in the building somewhere and Tadashi raced in to find him. But not before Hiro reached out to grasp onto his brother's wrist. He needed to know that his brother would be safe.
"Someone has to help."
Those were the last words that his brother ever spoke to him.

He was hurt. In pain. Everyone kept saying that he was 'still there' that Tadashi 'wasn't really gone'. But what did they know? Hiro had been one of the people closest to his brother and he swore Aunt Cass was the only one who didn't try to telling him that Tadashi's memory would live on. He skipped the classes he'd worked so hard for. Remained cooped up in his room. Hiro didn't want to go anywhere. He didn't want to interact with anyone. He didn't want to eat. Right now all he wanted was to be left alone. But that was when he stubbed his toe on the edge of his bed.
That one word changed everything. Baymax had activated again even though Hiro had convinced himself that the robot was just... gone. Without Tadashi there was no reason for Baymax to have been active. Yet he was, and the robot even found the final Microbot - his invention that had pretty much caused Tadashi's death - which looked like it was trying to escape somewhere. Boy did Hiro regret not paying more attention when Baymax left the house to chase after it.
After chasing the healthcare companion halfway across San Fransokyo, the last thing he'd expected was an abandoned warehouse. Much less for inside to be mass-produced version of his microbots which where then forced to attack them by a guy in a Kabuki mask.
There was a reason no one believed him when he said that.
After that one thought had been set firmly in his mind. That guy in the Kabuki mask; he'd managed to get his tech from the fire at the college. The police couldn't do anything because they didn't believe him. No one ever did because he was a kid. Well this kid was about to take things into his own hands. But not on his own. Baymax was a better candidate to help him out.
"I fail to see how knowing karate makes me a better healthcare professional."
"I fail to see how you fail to see, that it's AWESOME!"
In that one moment at the contaminated island when he ripped of Kabuki's mask did his world crumble more than it already had. The face of the man doimg all this wasn't the first suspect. It was the person who his brother had run back into the fire to save. The one who they all thought had died. The man who had killed Tadashi through his kindness.
Professor Callaghan was Kabuki.
He was angry. Rage seethed from him because the man Tadadhi had trusted was the one who killed him. Hiro's grief, his suffering for both of them was for nothing. Tadashi really had died and his killer was right there. Without a second thought he removed the healthcare chip his brother had created for Baymax, telling the robot to kill the man who had caused all that pain in the name of revenge.
The only people who had tried to help him through this - Gogo, Honey Lemon, Wasabi and Fred - he pushed them away. Further away than he had originally. Because they'd stopped Baymax. They hadn't let him get revenge for his brother. So he flew away and left them behind.
He needed to make that guy pay.
Which was difficult when he wasn't there anymore. San Fransokyo was nowhere to be seen. Hiro was still angry. He needed to do something, hit someone, stop people from doing anything more to hurt others. It took a while but he upgraded the suit he'd arrived in. Now he could go out and defend himself. Without Baymax. Without the others.
He was going to make them all pay.
