amestris is a world of magic, a world where science can be harnessed to create. but that magic isn't a part of your world. not when you're the only son of a pair of nice shopkeepers in eastern amestris. not when you call yourself a country boy and you have a better affinity for weapons than alchemy. not when you've watched alchemy tear apart the world of your friends and you've had to watch them suffer while you could do nothing but lend a kind word and a shoulder to lean on.
you've never understood alchemy, it was always just a bit over your head. a lot of things ended up being a bit over your head. besides, there was never any use for you to be good at alchemy. the boy of store owners didn't need to be good at alchemy to go work on a farm or behind a counter.
you did alright in school, didn't have a plan of what you wanted to do after school until you were almost done. everyone thought you'd work for your parents at the general store, settle down and get married, have a few kids. something generic, something basic, something simple. ha, you sure showed them.
you became a dog of the military and honestly, you loved every second of it.
luck has never really been on your side. especially not in the romance department. school had always been an easy place to meet people, but that didn't mean you'd kept their attention for long. and after joining the state military, it was even harder. sure, there were some girls in the military. you had one in your unit after all. but riza was hard to pin down. something about her just feels almost like a sister. she's not really your type either. then again, you never really wanted to mix the military with your dating life. although it always seems to happen.
you can still remember roy telling you to break up with your new girlfriend because your unit was being transferred to a new city. it still stung, that realization that all of your relationships had the potential to be over just like that. you didn't let it get you too down, you still met new girls in the new towns and you slowly forgot about that one you left.
everyone calls roy the heartbreaker of the group and it's true. he's the heartbreaker and you're the one whose heart is always being broken. not by him, well not immediately. first it's every girl that you threw your heart at. you always wore it on your sleeve in the hopes that someone would see it, take it, and cherish it.
you didn't realize that that would be a nearly impossible feat.
almost as impossible a feat as joining the military, but you did that and you knew eventually... some day you'd find that one who'd steal your heart.
roy mustang. the king on the chess board where you are the knight. you hadn't really questioned his chess analogy. it had always worked for strategies and it was roy, you never questioned him. you believed that everything he said he would do, he would. there was never any doubt about him in your mind. and eventually there grew to be no doubt about him in your heart.
except you hadn't told him. you hadn't told him that the reason you'd been looking for girls to date recently was to get him off your mind, to erase the idea that the witty banter between the two of you was more than just friendly. it wasn't your place to tell him that your feelings could compromise your unit, that it could end up with you all being split up because you thought roy mustang was attractive.
but it was more than just an attraction and you were sure that he could tell something was different. he had to know when your first day in central you'd met a new girl named solaris and you began dating her instantly. you didn't know who she was or anything about her except that she was pretty.
and she kind of reminded you of roy.
besides, she was curious about your job, about your friends. you just took it to be that she cared and maybe after all these years you found someone who actually did care. that actually wanted to be a part of your life. solaris seemed too good to be true, but that had never stopped you before. plus she was a pleasant distraction when you really needed it at the moment.
it turns out she was too good to be true. solaris was really lust trying to trick you. trying to figure out your secrets and be able to get to your unit. for once luck was on your side and you hadn't really told her anything important. only the basics, only things about you really.
that still didn't prepare you for when you saw her again after learning the truth. you still had to fight her, this girl who you had thought could possibly care for you. even though her bladed fingers pierced your abdomen, it felt like it went through your heart instead. and you knew you should have told roy the truth - about everything. it was just too late now as the pain and blood loss caused you to lose consciousness.
the next time you woke up, you were on a train, not a familiar train in amestris. this one was different - you could tell that in between the gasping breaths of pain as a group of people surrounded you and began to supply medical attention.
it's a while again before you wake up again. the capitol they tell you. that's where you are. you've never heard of it and you try to sit up to ask more, but it's hard. the staff helps you, but there's a weight over your legs and you try to wiggle them, then proceed to poke at them in hopes that maybe they're just asleep. though no sense of touch can be felt from them, they're dead. and you're useless.
terminus is where you're sent next. the most medically advanced, the most technologically advanced. they're supposed to help you. the other place just made sure you didn't die. you wish you had though - at least then you could have been useful for something.
what good was a soldier that couldn't walk?
they did help you though. they repaired your wounds so that you were left with only faint scars, barely raised pieces of skin - a fraction of a reminder of what really happened. they offered you a chance to walk again and you took it. immediately. you felt useless without your legs and maybe once you got them back your luck would finally turn.
one thing to note though is that i pulled him from the story line from when he got stabbed by lust and she damaged several of his vertebrates, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. however with the technological and medical advances in terminus, they gave him some metal vertebrates that are able to connect to his nerves and he's able to walk again. but, he's still relearning all of that so he switches between using a wheelchair and using a cane to walk. he's been in this world for about half a year now.
