i know you
You were born to a King and Queen that had longed for a child for many years. Your birth was celebrated throughout the land because you were the miracle child of the King and Queen. You felt loved and safe and you had no worries in the world. Why would you? You were just an innocent, little baby that had not done anyone any wrong.
There was a party where you saw many new faces. You were curious as you gazed up at the young boy that you were betrothed to as he made a face at you. You laughed as any happy baby tends to do because you thought it was funny. There was happiness and joy in the atmosphere and in turn, you were full of happiness and joy. You loved seeing the faces of the people that wore golden, pretty things on their head the most. You could see how much they loved you and you loved them the most, as well. They were your 'mama' and 'papa'.
Soon, an announcement was made about the arrival of three good fairies. They had kind faces and seemed happy to meet you. They gave you gifts using their good magic; gifts of beauty and song. You did not understand but enjoyed the pretty sparkles that fell upon you before they disappeared. The one in blue came forth but things became terrifying. You were afraid as a terrifying fairy appeared and cast a curse upon you because she had taken offense at not having been invited by your parents to your party. You could not understand how one could be so cruel. You had done nothing wrong and yet now you had been cursed to prick your finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die before the end of your sixteenth birthday.
Your mother held you close and you felt safe once more, especially once the evil fairy was gone. Nothing bad in the world could happen to you so long as you had your mother and father. They loved you and would do anything to protect you. That was why it was so distressing when you were taken away from them. Did they not love you? Why were they letting the three good fairies who no longer had wings or their wands take you away from them? They did not want you to go. You could see it in their eyes and in the way your mother cried as she told you that it was for your protection.
And so, you were taken to an old cottage that lay deep in the forest. Eventually, your memories of your parents faded. You felt safe and loved by the three women that were raising you. Yet, you always felt a sense of something that was missing in your life.
i walked with you
Your name was now Briar Rose and as far as you knew, you always
had been Briar Rose. You remembered nothing of your life before being brought to the forest. You were a happy child and a handful to your three beloved guardians. You would do just about anything for them. You felt loved, safe and protected by them. Still, you did wish they would loosen the reins a little. You had never met another human being in all of your life but you didn't really question this since you felt your three guardians were just keeping you safe.
The animals were your friends and as you grew up, you began to be able to understand and communicate them more and more as time passed by. You knew nothing of the world except for the things you dreamed about in your own imagination. You were an utterly innocent girl but you dreamed of finding love. You always woke up from your dreams right before being kissed and it always left you feeling disappointed and curious. You began to feel the stirrings of wanting to find something more in your life. You began to question why you shouldn't talk to strangers.
On the day of your sixteenth birthday, everything changed for you. As you were sent off to get berries, you were mischievously suspicious of your three guardians. You knew they were planning something for you and it delighted you.
As you went on with your delegated chore, you were joined by your animal friends. You adore them as you do all animals. You sing as you walk along the forest because it is what you love to do. You felt carefree and safe within the woods you had called your home for as long as you could remember. As you watched the birds with their mates, you could not help but wonder why they all had a love but yet, you did not. You wondered if you would ever have a love of your own and you wished for it. You gaze longingly at the kingdom that you can see in the distance, wondering about the people within it.
You lament about how you are treated like a child when you are now sixteen. You never get to meet anyone and you want to. Your animal friends are wonderful but you would adore having human friends as well. The only place you have met someone new has been in your dreams. You share your dream about your tall, handsome prince with your animal friends and wish that he was real. You hold hope that he is because you have dreamt of him several times and you have heard it said that if you dream a thing more than once, it is sure to come true.
Your animal friends try to cheer you up and you are happily amused as they don a cloak, hat and boots in the guise of being your dream prince. It doesn't really occur to you to question where they came from. It simply never crosses your mind as you dance with your animal friends. You were shocked when a man joined in and danced with you. He was a stranger and you had been taught not to talk to strangers so you tried to leave. He was so handsome and you could not help but be charmed by him. It did not take long for him to wipe away your caution as you spent time with him. It was the most wonderful time of your life and he made you feel things that you had never felt before. This was love, you were sure of it.
He asked for your name and you realized that you had done what you had been told you should never do. You had spoken to a stranger and had even danced with him. You loved him and yet you did not even know his name. He asked when he would see you again and you said never at first because you knew that you should never have even spoken to him in the first time. Eventually, you bid him to come to your home, utterly unable to resist the thought of seeing him again. You were sure that your three guardians would adore him once they met him.
once upon a dream
You were full of joy and song as you made your way home. You wondered where everyone had gotten to when your eyes fell onto the most beautiful dress you had ever seen. It only added to your already quite extraordinary joy. It was the happiest day of your life and you couldn’t wait to tell your beloved guardians all about your love. They, however, were not happy. In fact, they said that it was terrible
that you had fallen in love and you could not understand why. You were sixteen and certainly old enough to have a suitor. You were confused, why were they not happy for you?
You were bemused as they informed you that you were betrothed and had been since birth. Not only that but you were betrothed to a prince! This had to be some sort of joke, you figured. A mistake. Only princesses could be betrothed to princes and you were not a princess. You were Briar Rose, a peasant girl that had been raised by three kindly women.
The three guardians that you had trusted for all of your life then informed you that you were actually Princess Aurora. You had been lied to all of your life. You felt betrayed and devastated. You and your guardians had no way of knowing that the young man that you had met and your betrothed were one and the same. Therefore, your heart broke as you were informed that you could never see the young man that you had met in the forest again. You were to be returned to the parents that you no longer remembered. You didn’t want to go; you wanted to stay and be with the man you loved.
How could they do this to you? You refused their comfort. You wept until you felt that there were no tears left in your body. This couldn’t be happening; this was supposed to be the happiest day of your life. It never occurred to you to run away or to put up more of a fight. Perhaps you might have if you had been able to think more clearly but you were in too much emotional pain to think past the things that you were being told to do.
You were sad and listless as you were brought to the castle that you had looked at longingly in the past. You thought that it was some sort of bittersweet irony. You went silently along with the three fairies as they brought you to a room for you to wait in. They gifted you a crown and placed it on your head as they spoke of your right and your royal duty. You wanted no part of it!
You wept for your lost hopes, dreams and love. You were glad when the three fairies left you alone so that you could grieve your losses in privacy.
You could not possibly had known that the evil fairy had found you at last. Your body was not your own as you followed a glowing, green orb. What was it and where was it taking you? You did not know and you were not fully aware of anything besides that green orb. A spinning wheel appeared before you, an object that you had never seen before. You wanted to touch it but resisted. You heard a voice telling you to touch the spindle, commanding you to do so. You pricked your finger and the next thing you knew, you were asleep. The curse that had been placed on you at birth had come to pass and now you could only be woken by love's first kiss.
Except - when you woke up, you weren’t in your own world. You were somewhere else. You were lost and confused but ended up settling in a place called Zephyr. It reminded you of the home that you had grown up with its wilderness. You didn’t know of any way to get from where you came from so you figured you could start over. It would be hard for you to do it on your own since you had never been alone before but you had faith and optimism on your side. It seemed natural for you to become an animal welfare volunteer and now all you had to do was take each day as it came. And, perhaps, one day, your heartsong would lead your love to find you in this strange, new land.
