there is a clear difference between heaven and hell. anglo-saxon biblical references will tell you that there is one god and one devil, satan who fell from heaven at the beginning of days. according to this legend, satan was one of god’s closest angels, but seeing god’s creations come to form, he grew envious, he claimed humankind was flawed—he fell. he lured the first two humans into sin, he is still doing so today.
you’ve met him. satan. he’s not all that intimidating, really.
then again, that’s european legend, that’s western civilization’s version of the story. maybe that’s why you don’t fear him, he is not your vision of hell. instead, you see kings—lord enma, the ruler of hell and his righthand man, hoozuki and they are far more worthy of your respect. even if, technically, you don’t find enma scary at all. it’s hoozuki who you can’t quite get along with, and for good reason. maybe. sort of. honestly you don’t remember exactly why the two of you hate each other.
”you and hoozuki-san look so alike!” oh, right. that could be why.
you wonder why that annoys you so much. right from the beginning, when the two of you met for the first time, people commented on how alike you looked. you’re attractive, right? it’s a compliment to hoozuki, right? if hoozuki had a good sense of humor maybe he’d laugh at that. since he doesn’t, he’d probably punch you in the face or throw you through a wall. he’s done it before…
you didn’t see the resemblance the first time you met, but hoozuki’s uppity, serious attitude was just so boring and you wanted to change that. he got you drunk the first time you met. to be fair, you did offer him your sake and then he proceeded to give it to you in the hopes that you'd get drunk enough to give him the information you wanted. you'd almost forgotten about his part in being the reason you were found by humans when you drunkenly fell out of the heavens. maybe you shouldn’t have started off making stupid bets, because both of you were stubborn as hell and that much you discovered the second you fell into this trap. hoozuki not only looks similar to you, says everyone, but he’s as stubborn as you are, as proud as you are, and as dead set on making trouble for you as you are to him. you’re definitely no where near as lame as he is, though. (just to make that clear.)
hoozuki is your hell.
really, in every way.
that’s not even an insult, either, considering he’s the right hand man of king enma and he’s basically running hell because everyone can see lord enma is fairly useless. the king’s skills lay in sitting at his desk and eating pork bowls, ramen, anything that is put in front of him, he’s more delightful to be around than hoozuki and you prefer doing business with him any day.
you spend your days in heaven. it's where a celestial beast like yourself should be, of course. you can go between heaven, earth, hell--sometimes you drop by hell just to annoy hoozuki. but, your garden is in heaven, full of peach trees and fluffy white rabbits and it's beautiful and plenty of customers come to your doors to purchase goods from you. you do well for yourself, all things considered.
you are giving, in many ways, but that doesn't come without some give or take, and you've been known to take quite a lot. not in a bad way, sure! you're not sadistic, you're in heaven, after all, how bad could you be, right?
you came to be into existence since the world itself was created. at least, so the japanese lore says. used as a ward against illnesses from a small japanese town, you fought off plague and any bad luck that could've come to the land which you guarded--and from then on you were put on a pedestal and regarded as a medicinal deity of sorts. you would never and will never complain, after all you've found that being extremely skilled in medicine does you many wonders. ladies love it! men love it too, but they typically aren't your focus group. mostly because the only men you are around nowadays are either a) not at all your type or b) hoozuki.
and again, it's not like hoozuki's ugly or anything. he can't be if everyone says he's fortunate enough to look like you. and okay, they don't throw the word fortunate in there but you figure that's what they mean. the two of you have known each other for a long time, he's serious where you're just around for a good time, he's stoic and you are far more prone to showing your emotions--he teases you for being a lightweight and a flirt, a womanizer he'd say--and you tease him for being too uptight, too much of a demon.
you understand each other, though. there's an unspoken sort of thing between the two of you, and sometimes it bugs you. it bugs you that you get bored from time to time up in heaven, you're dealing with people who are good and pure and you feel like you want a little bit of a break from it. what better than to go find your least favorite demon, right? the two of you are too alike in all ways, but maybe that's why you find him comfortable. sort of. sometimes.
it's when you look at him that you realize your life has been incredibly lonely. he may be a demon, but he's surrounded by people who respect him, care for him, want to do right by him--you feel somewhat isolated. it's one of your problems, you're emotional and you seek out comfort in the form of one night stands, you're not loyal or faithful because more often than not, these people mean little to you. they're just there to pass the time, they're there to make you forget that you're an immortal being and yet you've never had someone you could count on being there forever except hoozuki.
maybe that's why you hate him.
because despite it all, he's not going anywhere. you keep making bets with him to hope he sticks around, he's unkind, you expect that from a demon like him, though you're not about to make any generalizations because you've met plenty of kind demons--oko, for one, pretty and kind and lets you lay your head in her lap, (ok, she did call it sexual harassment once, but it wasn't, you promise. she was joking.) she may be a demon and she may have a sadistic streak in her, but in comparison to hoozuki? she's an angel.
so maybe it's just this demon. this demon you expect to be ruthless, he's running hell and you watch him from above, looking down on him in amusement from heaven, he's power-hungry, you can see it in his eyes, you can see so much in his eyes--too bad you can't stand to look at them for too long.
