a bitter pill
She could feel the thick liquid dripping from her fingers. Her chest rising with every deep breath she took. The hilt of the knife clutched tightly in her hand. Her virgin white dress covered in crimson red. There was no time for tears. Her parents were dead. Their attackers lay at her feet. Their lives taken from them by the knife she held firmly. Nine years old and a murderer. Her and the young boy named Eren who came to her rescue.
She was warned by her mother about human traffickers. Her mother was of Asian descent, the last of her race, which made her valuable to traffickers, who would be able to sell her as a slave within the Capitol. Her mother’s blood was also her blood, which meant that she too was an important asset to such devious individuals. Now they were dead. Her attackers and her parents, all of them dead on the same day. The only remaining memory that the nine year old Mikasa holds of her mother, was the scar she wore of the ancient Asian clan symbol her mother had carved into her skin when Mikasa was younger. The military police brigade arrived, along with Eren his father. As the realization of the situation settled in, shivers ran down her spine. Eren offered her a scar, an item of clothing that symbolized the dawning of a new day. After the military police brigade searched the house and declared the murders you and young Eren had committed as crimes in self-defense, Mikasa joined the Yeager family as their newest member.
She remembered the first time she even saw a Titan. The day had started seemingly peaceful. Eren and Mikasa watched as the survey corps returned from their failed expedition. It was the latest setback in the fight against the Titans. It sparked within Eren the desire to join the survey corps, a desire he expresses during dinner. His parents are opposed to the idea, which greatly upsets the young boy and makes him storm off. Mikasa follows him, feeling her adoptive brother was upset and needed someone to talk too. Though, she agreed with his parents and would express this regardless of Eren his feelings. Outside, they run into Armin who was being beaten up by local bullies. In an effortless fight, Eren and Mikasa quickly freed Armin from them and continued on their way. It was while the three of them were sitting down somewhere quiet and discuss the impossible idea of living outside of the walls, that the Titan attacked.
It was nicknamed the Colossus Titan as it reached far greater heights than any ordinary Titan. The wall was breached, torn down by the giant which allowed various smaller Titans to enter a human build sanctuary. Chaos ensued as everyone scattered to find their loved ones or impossible hiding places. The truth was that there was no running from Titans. They were larger, stronger and faster than human kind. There was a reason the survey corps failed to fight these unholy creatures. Mikasa knew it was an uphill battle, yet humanity believed that they stood on equal ground, if only they trained hard enough, long enough.Eren darted towards their home, followed closely by Mikasa, but they found it in ruins. Underneath the debris lay their mother, her body paralyzed by the large pieces of rubble that crushed her spine. Unable to free her from her position, Eren refuses to leave his mother’s side though Mikasa pleads with him that they must go. Hannes saves them, but while he runs carrying the children to safety, Mikasa witnesses as a Titan devours their mother.
After being placed on a ship that would lead them to the safety of the inner wall Rose, an armored titan breaks through the inner gates of wall Maria, allowing more Titans to roam freely. Once the ship arrives inside of wall Rose, Eren confronts a soldier who expresses his annoyance with the fact that he has to share his food with these refugees from within wall Maria. As Eren attacks him, the soldier gives him a proper beating, which only lights a larger fire within his chest. Mikasa witnesses him as he loses any and all senses. As soon as he attacks Armin for stating his doubt, she walks up to him and punches him, hoping the blow would bring back his senses. It was then that de declares that she’d do everything within her power to keep him alive. The government was desperate for new soldiers, as they were planning on attempting to reclaim their lost lands without suffering any more casualties. Mikasa enrolled into the army, reluctant at first but willing to follow Eren to the death. They were assigned to the 104th training corps.
The training was easy. Mikasa handled herself perfectly and quickly proved that she was not to be trifled with. She was praised for being one of the best trainees in military history, which left her cold. Being the best soldier wasn’t something she’d ever dreamed off, and if Eren hadn’t applied to the military, she would’ve never signed up herself. She watched as her adoptive brother struggled grasping the basics of the vertical maneuvering equipment, and felt sorry for him as he wanted this so desperately. Eventually he managed to get the hang of it, at which point their training intensified.
At the graduation ceremony, Mikasa was ranked first in her class. All three of them, Mikasa, Eren and Armin, now have to decide which military branch they want to join. Though their preferences went out to different sections, they all joined the survey corps, though they hardly had time to fully apply as the Colossus Titan reappeared and breached Wall Rose the same way it had done Wall Maria. Mikasa was assigned to the rear guard, which meant she had to fend off the titans while civilians escaped for the safety of Wall Sheena. This was a dangerous position, one she knew not many came back from. Before leaving and fulfilling her duty, she made Eren promise her not to do anything reckless.
Her team was assigned their positions, but it didn’t take long for them to be overrun by titans in various shapes and sizes. Mikasa spotted an abnormal titen approaching escaped civilians and quickly killed it by slicing the back of its neck, the way she had been taught during her training. Maneuvering between buildings using her vertical maneuvering equipment, she found out why the civilians hadn’t yet reached the safety of Wall Sheena. A businessman had overloaded a cargo cart and was blocking the escape route. As she tried to convince him to move his cart, he refused and stated that his cargo was important. Hearing the man claim that his material belongings were more valuable than the lives of his fellow humans, she resorted to threatening him after knocking his guards unconscious. These actions scared the man well enough and he moved his goods, freeing the path to safety.
Watching as a mother and daughter show their gratitude for freeing up the road and thus saving them, Mikasa came to the devastating realization that Eren was the only family she had left. Her parents were dead, as were her adoptive parents. It seemed that her happiness had an expiration date.
After the Trost District is completely evacuated, Mikasa heads to the front guard in order to help her fellow soldiers. She discovers that the few survivors are low on gas, which means their vertical maneuvering equipment no longer worked to the best of its abilities. There was a supply team, but they had barricaded themselves inside of headquarters, which many of her fellow trainees were unable to reach due to their lack of gas. The titans were winning, or so it seemed. That was when Armin gave Mikasa the worst news she could possibly receive during such times. Eren was dead.
Her grief overwhelmed her, which made her act irrational and dangerous. After she regrouped the surviving members of her team, she insults them deeply and states that she would go and break through the titan barrier to get to headquarters. As she moves between buildings, she hacks and slashes whichever titan she comes across. She stopped caring whether she lived or died, because none of it mattered at this point. Her parents where dead, her adoptive parents were dead and now Eren was taken from her. What else did she have left? She was running out of gas, but couldn’t bring herself to care. As two titans were closing in on her, she remembered how Eren saved her from the kidnappers that killed her mother, firing up her fighting spirit once more.
She stands, ready to defeat the titan that is coming for her, but watches as a different titan comes running up from behind her and saves her by running into the oncoming one. Completely ignoring Mikasa, which gives Armin the time to rescue her. It takes three seconds for Mikasa to get her head back into the game and, followed by Armin, she heads towards the supply headquarters. Arriving, the watch as this rogue titan continues killing other titans, a sight neither of them had ever seen or heard off. They end up luring this unusual titan to headquarters, ridding themselves of the titans that lay siege of the building. After which, the trainees manage to successfully refill their tanks and clear access to Wall Rose.
They watch as the rogue titan destroys the lasts titans that surround them, but Mikasa is taken aback when she sees Eren sticking out of the nape of this titan his neck. Overcome with relief, Mikasa quickly rescues Eren and embraces him. That overwhelming emptiness inside her filling back up, untying the knot in her stomach.
When they return to the wall, her fellow soldiers were instructed to hand over Eren to a superior officer, and to treat what had happened as confidential. Mikasa refuses to hand her only remaining family member over to them, which causes them to accuse her and her friends of treason. They were surrounded by Captain Weilman’s men, who prompted to execute them. She drew her blades, threatening to kill anyone who tried to harm Eren, but Weilman doesn’t hesitate and orders a canon to fire at them. The canon was blocked by Eren, who activated his titan form, confirming Weilman’s beliefs. The carcass that he summoned wasn’t as impressive as his rogue titan form, but enough to scare everyone to their core.
After this, Mikasa watches as Armin pleads for Eren his life. Claiming that this titan form he possesses could be helpful, but everyone is too scared to think rationally. Before the order could be given to fire at them again, they are saved by commander Dot Pixis who was the head administrator of the southern region. He sends them on a mission to close the breach within Wall Rose with a rock that only Eren could lift, though he would have to activate his titan form once again.Once in titan form, Eren loses control, no doubt due to stress and mixed feelings about this new revolation. Mikasa tries to guide him, but he attacks her, leaving a permanent scar above her eye. Eren knocks himself out, rendering himself useless, but as an elite team protects him while he recovers, he eventually regains control and places the rock where they needed it. Though, many causalities had fallen and Mikasa realized that this was only the beginning of an uphill battle.
The battle of Trost District left many emotionally wounded. Eren was brought before a military tribunal, where they would decide over his fate. Mikasa felt hopeless, as even her best efforts to defend him were not enough. They forces her to testify against him and his reckless actions, as they had frightened everyone within the courtroom. She’s also forced to watch helplessly as Eren is assaulted by a soldier that outranked both him and herself, called Levi. Where he had gallantly saved them during the battle of Wall Rose, he now took it upon himself to put Eren in his place. When two captured titans were discovered killed, everyone within their team needed to bring in their equipment for inspection. The two titans were captured during their last battle, and were meant to be experimented on. She had nothing to hide and handed over her equipment without thinking about it twice.
Later a commander named Erwin Smith comes to recruit new members for the Survey Corps. They had an expedition scheduled and needed fresh blood to strengthen their team. Many soldiers leave, wanting nothing more to do with the survey corps and the active hunt for titans. Mikasa stays, alongside her friends.
She is assigned part of 57th expedition, but shortly after leaving for Wall Maria, a female titan appears and murders numerous Survey Corps members. As fast as they could manage, the team reaches Titan forest, outside of the wall and Mikasa is stationed at the outskirts with orders to make sure no titan enters the dense green. As she’s stationed up in a tree, fighting off titans as they tried to enter the forest, she hears Eren his titan cry. Without any hesitation, she turns inwards and hurries herself to him, only to find the female titan eating his human body. She charges in, trying to cut up the female titan in order to safe Eren, but finds it has no use.
Reluctantly, she teams up with Levi and they manage to get Eren back, joining the formation later on. Their plan to capture the female titan goes south, and while Mikasa is on her way to rescue a rookie soldier who disobeyed direct orders from their commander, everything went black and moments later she woke up in Elysion.
